This is a personal piece. I am sad and sorry to hear about Joe Biden’s latest battle. This is something I would say about anyone I know who is dealing with a serious medical issue. And I would also feel this way about anyone, especially someone I know and like.
I find it fascinating to know people I thought cared about me are angry I acknowledge this. Furthermore, they are offended if I admit I have fond memories of the former President of the United States. Still, it is not my first rodeo and not the first time I stepped in something unpleasant by standing publicly behind the wrong horse.
Covering Joe Biden’s Politics
Yes, I have spent a lot of time with Joe Biden over the years as an ABC News Producer. However, I never did cross paths with him during his presidency. We didn’t play golf together or go to each other’s homes. But we certainly enjoyed a good working relationship which included many on-camera interviews, lengthy off-camera conversations, and plenty of laughs.
Now you know why I began here by writing it is personal, not political. To me, it is a sad state indeed when many Americans cannot even comprehend or separate the two in a situation like this.
Joe Biden’s Cancer Prognosis
Stage 4 advanced prostate cancer is Joe Biden’s latest battle. That it has metastasized to the bones is an altogether different and increasingly difficult battle. Upon considering the patient is 82-years old, it is safe to say battles such as these are more like a war. And finally, taking into account all the unique, unimaginable stress of this particular 82-year old, one knows we’re not talking about “a young 82.”
Having interviewed many of the world’s top clinical researchers in oncology, it is amazing to see the progress they are making with treatment options. What used to be a prognosis of weeks or months is very often a timeline of years now for even advanced cancer cases. We will know more about Biden’s prognosis as he responds to treatment. The best news of all is being a former United States President, some of the greatest minds and practitioners of science and medicine will the ones leading the fight in Joe Biden’s latest battle. Thank goodness for them, it’s all about cancer and not politics.
